My choice for the best temporal artery thermometer is the Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer. I have reviewed a ton of baby thermometers and talked with thousands of parents. The Exergen temporal artery thermometer consistently gets great reviews and never fails to be accurate. I personally own an Exergen, and it has been more reliable than any other thermometer I have used on my children.
**Update** Exergen is now offering $20 in rebates off your purchase of a thermometer. That is an amazing deal! You can find the rebate forms here.
What is a temporal artery thermometer?
Temporal artery thermometers scan the temporal artery to measure the body’s core temperature. These thermometers are commonly called forehead thermometers (although, there are forehead thermometers that are not temporal scanners) and are a quick, easy way to measure your child’s temperature.
The temporal artery is connected to the heart via the carotid artery, directly leading from the aorta, the main trunk of the arterial system. It offers constant blood flow. It is the only such artery positioned close enough to the skin surface to provide access needed to take an accurate measurement.
It is easy to use because it is ideally located at the front portion of the forehead. The temporal artery scanner is easier and gentler to use than other types of thermometers such as oral, rectal, underarm and in-ear thermometers because it is truly non-invasive.
It is always best to obtain a rectal temperature on infants less than six months old. That being said, the American Academy of Pediatrics has stated that the Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer is the next best thing.

What makes a great temporal artery thermometer?
Accuracy- When your child is sick an accurate temperature reading is the single most important feature in a thermometer.
Ease of use- No parent wants to be fumbling around in the dark trying to figure out how to use their thermometer.
Speed- With so many lightning quick thermometers on the market, I am always surprised when I am triaging a child and have to hold for five minutes while their parents check their temperature. This is doubly awful when the temp in question is being measured rectally.
Reliability- You need a temporal artery thermometer that is ALWAYS going to work. I can’t tell you how many times I am helping parents treat their child and we aren’t sure if they need to go to the hospital or not because “the thermometer is not working”.
Of all the thermometers I have reviewed and talked with parents about, the Exergen temporal scan thermometer has been the best temporal artery thermometer.
This thermometer was chosen for being quick, reliable, and having extra features that make it easier to take care of your sick child.
Reliability and accuracy are so very important when your child is sick. It can be very frustrating to get a different reading every time. I have never had this problem with an Exergen.
The Exergen temporal artery thermometer comes with a Smart Glow backlight making it easier to get readings in the middle of the night without disturbing your child.
Along these same lines is the ability to silence the beep. Now you can take your child’s temperature without disturbing their sleep.
Parents often forget what the last few temperature readings were, and this can be important information to give your pediatrician. This model has your back by remembering the last eight temperature readings.
Price: Coming in at under 30.00 this thermometer is an affordable option. There are 20.00 in rebates from Exergen making it an even better deal!
Pediatricians recommend the Exergen as the best temporal artery thermometer and you will often find them being used by nurses in office, as well as the ER. In fact,
